Take Deep Breaths…

Well things are cooling down a little. I’m finally catching up to where I should have been yesterday, at least!

You know what’s nice? Tomato soup. And I don’t even like tomatoes, but I like the soup. Especially when it’s the creamy kind and I’ve got crackers to dip into it. It’s a very relaxing lunch. With the Bach I’m got playing right now, I’m finally soothing down a little.

(much more)

There are just some things in life that are more or less objectively calming, and I guess there are some things calming on a more personal level, or even just by association. Jen is lending me this terrific little aromatherapy device. It looks like a tube of chapstick but you just open it a little and vents release this wonderful lavender scent from within. I think lavender is one of those things that is just chemically calming to the body/mind/spirit (at least according to the ’science’ of aromatherapy!). Sure, some people might not like lavender, but I think it’s a case of an active dislike vs. an active like, if you know what I mean. When unbiased, lavender is very calming.

I also love those ‘eye pillows’ that have the lavender in them, and they are so nice and cool on your eyelids….

An example of something that calms on a personal level would be when I play the piano. I find it very calming, but of course it just isn’t the same for all people! Music is like that too, because of the strong personal preferences. As much as I dislike rap music, I’d believe that to a Home-E*I consider these characters to be victims of peer and society pressure created by the commercialization of cookie-cutter personalities, and therefore deserve a name that would appear to be created by a marketing team in the Hood it could be calming. And said Home-E might find Prokofiev intolerable.

A funny example of something calming by association was in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil when John Cusack’s character, on a travel assignment from his Manhattan life, is visiting the slow South of Alabama. To help him to fall asleep at night, he played a tape of city traffic!

My wife is another example. She falls asleep best when the TV is on, it doesn’t seem to matter what channel. (Sometimes when I’m working very late and she fell asleep to the Comedy channel, I’ll come in to find her peacefully sleep to a Girls Gone Wild! infomercial.) It’s just the sound of voices I guess. She doesn’t fall asleep nearly as easily when I’ve got my classical music station on (part of our digital cable package is a ton of music channels), which is the only TV I can fall asleep to! I prefer white noise to fall asleep to, like a quiet air conditioner vent or a fan on low. But voices are the other way for me, if I hear voices for some reason I have to pay attention to them. Don’t ask me why. Voices are probably the hardest thing for me to fall asleep to. One of these days I’ll get some of those cordless TV headphones for Jen….

What calms you?

    HI!!!!!
I am done with law school! Woo-ha. And I also took the bar and started work at the VA. I’ve been quite non-existant. :P But I bookmarked your journal. I have a LJ, but I’ve only written one thing. ;P

Hi! I’ve got an LJ account, but only to make comments on other people’s accounts. MT (MoveableType) is pretty straight-forward to install and, though I prefer writing my own software, not a bad package.

That’s very exciting about finishing up law school! Definately whoo-hoo-age! So did you end up specializing in internet law? If you work for the RIAA I’ll never forgive you. ;)
