SPAM: The uphill battle

I hate spam. I hate spam so much, I’m willing to spend hours out of my weekend battling it. I currently have 1,090 filters running on each of my domains ([company]labs.com, [company]designs.com, dreamdynamics.com, luxfx.com, britishhumour.net, tarotchick.com, and photogrove.com). I’m just waiting for the day when the server admins send me an email telling me that my filters are taking up too much of the CPU.

Which is why I’m in the extreme beginning stages of writing an email client. Most likely not for public release, at least not at first, more of an in-house tool. That’s my push these days, building tools that start out as in-house utilities and then refining them bit by bit until they are eventually ready for the public. It’s kind of a backwards way I think, the opposite of goal-oriented. But it makes more sense considering my expertise and that the software is definately not what brings in the $$$ around here.

You know what else I hate? Crickets. They’re all over the basement here. They found their way in when it was so hot this summer — to the point where every few days when I was going through papers, I’d lift a piece up and there would be a cricket underneath. Erin thought it was funny, hearing me complain at first. Because sure, the idea of crickets softly chirping all around you is kinda nice. But a few days later she was down here when they were doing their thing and she eventually ran upstairs, exclaiming that any more crickets and she would go nuts. I know exactly how she feels.

Right now I’m combatting it by playing a nature CD. The sound of rain, a few bird calls, and the crickets, that actually is nice!

I’m also still waiting for the Neil Gaiman interview to be posted at Slashdot. I really think my question had potential for being chosen! It was moderated to 5 out of 5 points fairly quickly, and it’s one of only about 25 questions with that ranking, so I’ve got a better than 1/3 chance!

I wonder how late I’ll be up tonight…
