And the Busy keeps coming
Wow. I’m in one of those states where there are so many little things — and a handful of big ones — on my plate at the same time my brain has put a lock-down on my entire momentum. Help!
Well, my cautious optimism about getting my ToDo assistant in working condition sometime this week has turned into mindless fantasy. And it’s not that it’s a very difficult project. I just have so much going on!
The good/bad news (good for our finances and portfolio, bad for my stress-level!) is that a really, really major project has, oh, an 85% or greater chance of completely flooding my pipeline in the next two or three weeks. It will keep me wildly busy for 6-8 weeks, and will help tremendously keeping our business above water! Plus it should also yield some pretty HIGH visibility, and as I’m putting a “designed by” on the bottom of all my work these days, it might even bring some extra work my way via the link.
On the lighter side of things, I set up a time for a student to come that wanted to shadow me in a couple of weeks. Hopefully I can help nudge a future web guru into the side of the righteous! For those that are wondering, web-righteous means:
- gaining complete control over your code by writing HTML in a text editor
not relying on some goofy GUI that will pump out nasty code — especially not Frontpage - always use PHP / MySQL!!
not ASP / MSSQL, and definately not ColdFusion - use Flash sparingly yet effectively
no lame text manipulations! - never use audio in Flash without user control
always give the user a stop button
- always utilize preloaders in Flash movies
never let the user sit waiting, not knowing what is happening - never do a drop shadow at 100%
40% - 60% is plenty for realism! most instances don’t need more than 35%! - know the different between GIF and JPEG
and when to use each
- forget about the web-safe palette!
first, there are only about 32 colors that are actually dependable, and second, the people that care are in the single-digit percentages
Oh there are lots more, of course. These are just the first eight or so to pop in my head. Being righteous isn’t as easy as eight steps, dontchewknow.
Oh, and the SPAM problem is getting worse. I’m wondering if the server-side filters have some kind of cap on them that they’re not telling me about. Maybe one of these days I’ll finally have time to start working on my email client. That would be nice…
