Book sale!
Just spent a few $$$ (ok, $15) at a library book sale, that was fun. I found a nice collection of Shakespeare, and what home library doesn’t need that? I found an interest book my Marilyn von Savant (smartest person alive) about stimulating intelligence. Cool.
Mostly I got some nice classical CDs. Score, they were just $2 apiece! (except for a Bruckner CD I got for $3) I got some Tchaikovsky, Verdi, Back, Elgan, and the Bruckner.
Oh and one of Erin’s hamsters has figured out how to escape so we’re going through more hamster crises. Our kids will never, ever have hamsters.

So how do the cats deal with this whole escaped hamster thing because I would totally be fearing for the hamster’s life if one were loose in my place. Not that I think Simon is a good hunter or anything. He probably couldn’t kill a small mammal or bird to save his life. However, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him accidentally kill one, either through excessive play or simply scaring the poor fucker to death. And even if he were good enough to keep away, I’d still expect him to be on alert if one were loose. You know, like using dogs to track people? I guess cats are rarely that well trained.

Well the cats have been known to kill a couple of mice, but they don’t seem to hunt them they just sort of play them to death. But these were really tiny mice — the size of the last digit on my thumb. Erin’s hamster has got a distinct size advantage. True, it’s a dwarf hamster, but it’s still probably 6-10 times bigger than that mouse.
But actually I did see Apollo confront the escapee the first time it was out, when I fished it out of the closet. They both just sniffed each other, it was weird. The hamster sat up on its hind legs, and Apollo got real low, and they just looked and sniffed at each other. Of course I pulled Apollo away before she could do anything else, but it was just amazing to see.
We’re not too afraid though, because Erin keeps her door shut all of the time, and since the hamster got out she has a towel over the crack under the door. We set an apple out yesterday, and it went missing last night, so we’re pretty sure the hamster is inside the room.
Those hamsters…always something new.
