Hamster Hunting!

I just got to create my childhood dream — a small animal trap! Ok that sounds weird I guess, but there is a story….

When I was little I was, as many of you know, fascinated with building things, mostly with string, but somewhat with levers, pulleys, etc. Well for part of my childhood I had this goal of building a squirrel trap or something like it. I might have seen a drawing in a book — the typical box-propped-up-with-a-twig-with-a-string-tied-on-it-while-you-wait-in-the-bushes-for-an-animal kind of trap.

I tried it just once but got discouraged. I eventually gave up actually making it, but I thought about it every now and then.

Well, since no store around had an actual live-trap for mice/rats/hamsters, I had my chance! I got the call tonight, “We can’t find a trap, so start building one.” Whoo-hoo!! So I took the basic idea from my childhood plans, with some careful tweaks to allow for a self-trapping (because there are no bushes in Erin’s room), very sensitive (because a dwarf hamster doesn’t weight very much) trigger.

I’m betting no luck tonight, but if we can keep from tripping it outselves every time we go in and out of the room, maybe in a day or two the little guy might fall into the trap. Either way, I’m excited (in one of those dorky-nostalgic ways) to have finally constructed the animal trap. Go me!

That’s beautiful Dave :) I remember hearing some of the ideas you came up with in your childhood days (”But they were only AA’s!!” and who could forget the “shocking” doorknob) but its good to see that you’re putting that expertise into constructive projects nowadays. Good luck on catching the little bugger.
