Tonight should have been Halloween
I think tonight was slated to be Halloween. Last night must have won by write-in or something. I just walked out to the video store*I’m by myself tonight; Erin has class this weekend in Emporia, and Jen has an overnight with the youth kids at her church. So I decided to go rent the movie neither want to see but that I’m curious about — Hulk. But, as I should have known, it was all checked out. The guy sort of laughed at me and said, “We’ve been out since, like, five o’clock.” Oh well. I got Dreamcatcher (the Stephen King story adapted by William Goldman) and Bulletproof Monk, which is probably going to be the one I will watch tonight. I bet Erin and Jen will want to watch Dreamcatcher. and really enjoyed the walk, because the night was just so cool.
It is chilly tonight, though not cold. A light jacket is plenty to keep you warm if you’re walking around. And it was that damp chill, too. A very foggy night. The kind where the night has eaten away the horizon, and the world seems to end a hundred yards away. A very heavy fog, so that all of the car headlights, streetlights, and various walkway lights glow brightly until they, too, are consumed by the night. But the bright ones glow far enough that when the odd branch passes in front of the light, it casts trailing shadows all the way to the ground, criss-crossing the glow.
It was eerie. It would have been the perfect Halloween.
