Democratic debates

Anybody catch the Democratic debate in Iowa? It was on earlier today, and I saw the first half. I’m about to go to bed and watch the last quarter. It was the first one I’ve watched, and the first time I’ve really seen any of these people outside of still photographs. They were pretty much as I expected — except Edwards’ accent was stronger than I had realized, and Kucinich really does have a funny looking head. For some reason I was really surprised when it turned out he didn’t speak like Elmer Fudd. No idea where that came from….

I was pretty impressed with Dean (who looks like he either has the stiffest neck in the world, or is trying to swallow his chin), Edwards, and I liked Kerry, but was most surprisingly impressed by Moseley Braun. I knew that she was in the lower rung in terms of preliminary pollings, but I have no idea why. She really knows her stuff and is quite eloquent — unlike the other two low-rungers. Kucinich, funny head aside, was more of a rambler than anything, and tended to express the same point again and again. Sharpton is the other low-runger, and was a very passionate speaker, but tended to come up with some pretty far-reaching analogies. In the end, though, Sharpton had the best moment of the night, when he said (as near as I can recall) the following, in response to a suggestion of Senator Edwards for the candidates to stop bickering amongst themselves and pool their efforts to try and get Bush out of the White House:

Every one of us, in our worst night’s sleep, is capable of running this country better than George Bush can wide awake

<Crush-voice>Sweeeeet. Totally.</Crush-voice>

update: I was doing some research, and here’s another reason I like Moseley Braun: she got her law degree at my alma mater! Go UofC!

I’m rather proud of the fact that I immediately understood the reference.

Heh, Bush got verbally bitch-slapped by a guy in a mullet.
