poor sick jen…

Poor Jen! She had food poisoning last week, and as soon as she got better got some kind of bug, and has had an upset stomach for the last few days….. Meanwhile my extra back strain from last night hasn’t gone away yet either, and although it’s much better already, I’m still knocked back several days in the overall healing process. We’re just falling apart!

Work is going well though. I’m nearly finished with the first draft of my newest project with The Rolling Hills. It’s another college tour, but this time nothing highly animated or complicated, just a good interactive slideshow with an audio tour built in. The tricky part about this is making it as compact as possible. The filesize for this tour is approaching astronomical! In addition to the dozens and dozens of photos they want to show, there is also a nearly seven minute audio tour. Even compressing at a barely-acceptible amount, it’s almost 800Kb just for the audio section. Add to that another 400Kb for the images that go along with it….then add another 200Kb for the body of the slideshow interface….and probably another 800Kb for the images that go with that! That’s a BIG presentation to be downloaded! And there’s talk of a small audio section in the main interface.

But fortunately I’ve been able to separate just about everything, so at least users won’t have to load it all at once. Still, I would hate to be on the receiving end of this! Even with high speed internet, the complete package will download even slower than most flash movies do on a dial-up. Yeesh.

Maybe I’ve missed something, but that only comes to about 2200k when you add it all up, which on high speed will be downloaded in about 10 seconds max, and I’ve waited an hour for flash movies before on 56k. That tour will suck for 56k users, but shouldn’t be a big deal at all for broadband. Unless you didn’t put everything in your description that’s going into it, that is… basically what I’m saying is, did I miss something?

Actually, all told, it was about 5.2MB, about 3.2MB of that from the pictures that went into the slideshow interface. I was comparing to my ‘ideal’ flash move of between 150KB and 250KB max.
