yes, even cartoons can be too dumb

One of the newer additions to the Noggin music video lineup is a Jack Johnson song called “Upside Down.” It’s a cute song, cute video, and shows a bunch of clips from the new Curious George movie. I like the video, except for one scene that makes me howl and throw insults at the screen. I’m assuming the clip in question is taken from the movie….

Now granted, this is the story of Curious George. It’s not like it’s a believable story or anything. But you would still expect the characters to follow some normal biological rules, right?

The scene in question begins underwater. Curious George is swimming along, looking for mischief like only a young monkey-ape-thing

Seriously, what is Curious George? I always thought he was supposed to be a monkey. Except he doesn’t have a tail — which means he’s an ape. Or something.

can. At the bottom of this river/pond/whatever is a hippo, happily napping underwater, like hippos do. Curious George swims up, and covers the hippos nostrils with his hands. A second later, the hippo’s eyes pop open, the hippo obviously in a state of panic. Another second later, the view cuts to the surface of the water, where the hippo surfaces and gasps for air, then gives Curious George (who has also surfaced) the evil eye, and settles back underwater.

The scene is obviously mimicking the roommate/sibling prank of holding the nose shut of someone who’s sleeping so that they wake up gasping for breath.

Except that HIPPOS DON’T BREATH UNDERWATER!!!

When they’re sleeping underwater, they rise automatically to take new a new breath every 1-5 minutes, without waking up. So what, exactly, would holding a hippo’s nostrils shut underwater do? Nothing! The hippo is already holding its breath. In fact, hippos close their own nostrils (and pull in their ears!) when they dive, so covering a hippo’s already closed nostrils is even more pointless, if that’s even possible!

This is just too dumb, even for a cartoon.
